Staffers need better protection: As electorate officers working for three MP’s in Queensland over a total of 9 years, the stories out of Newcastle and WA are no surprise. They typify electorate office employment. The suicide of an MP staffer in Brisbane and another former staffer on the Gold Coast have links to the same MP, yet no inquiry was or has been launched by the Queensland Parliament – their employer. Essentially, electorate staff are chattels of an MP - hired out by State Legislative Assemblies. It's the most abysmal employment deal in our IR system and MP's know it. So until those sitting in state and federal seats get off their butts and acknowledge their too-long support for an unfair, unsafe, biased and arcane IR model, the already long casualty list will keep growing.

Daniel, go away. We in the rest of the nation are really tired of your one sided diatribes against dirty arabs and your overall hatred of muslims.

Israel ethnically cleansed Palestine and that is not disputed even in Israel so why bother to dispute it here as if we are so stupid we can't read. We are aware that only 8,000 jews were in Gaza, but they lived on 30% of the country and oppressed the million or more Palestinians with continual murders and the murders continue to this day.

There are 200 nations on this planet, give us one good reason why the hell we have to pander to the non-state of Israel over and over and over again.

Bravo to Daniel Lewis for making a counterpoint to Loewenstein’s article. As for Marylin's comments - please learn to read what is written - none of the derogatory and vindictive adjectives that you attribute to Lewis are in his article. Living in Australia, you are of course free to voice your bigoted views without fear or regard for fact. Arrogance and Ignorance are a potent cocktail and one that you must really enjoy!

Staffers: Perhaps Julia should replicate her multi-million dollar training centre for WA oil and gas workers in the Capital where government staff seem to be suffering that Mumbai call centre virus. Assuming English is the vernacular in Parliament House one simple question had me served like a Slazenger in a record tennis rally. Bouncing from switched off minds with fierce backhand slices the tour of three ministerial offices went like a grand slam. Even rehiring Brendan’s listening bus or McCain’s straight-talk express might send a message to the robotic, hyper and vacuous individuals who staff three key and senior offices at frontline level.

Ewart Shaw and Mike Freeman: Staffers is short for members of staff, 'pressers' is short for press release. If you work as a member of staff - parliamentary or ministerial the abreviated 'staffer' is used and in newsrooms we write 'see pressr', meaning press release..hope it helps, but will stand corrected.
