Phil, I accept your point that a strongly performing Opposition leader is essential to take government but it is not the most important factor. A government that is stale, floundering and out of touch as the last government was is ripe for the taking. I think this government has enough good ideas and energy to sustain itself for a long time to come. It is also showing that its political management and projection skills are also strong and likely to maintain electoral support for an extended period. My predictions may well be wrong but the available evidence suggest they are in the right ballpark. Even most Liberals would feel “in their waters”, as Kath might, say that Rudd and Labor are unlikely to be beaten in the next two elections.

David M - what do I expect?

Not much - but they cannot afford to lose their base.The last 2 Oppositions that lost their base were Qld and NSW and looked what has happened as a result. In Qld they’ve turned into a bunch of political misfits whose predicament is so disasterous that they think that some Pineapple Party can only be an improvement, and the NSW Opposition has delivered the state a terrible government for the simple reason that the opposition is even worse.

This sort of analysis will no doubt push Tony Abbott and others to emerge from their depression and move against Nelson sooner rather than later but the fact is that Turnbull too has turned out to be a disappointment too, and is not looking like a strong alternative. He appears to lack conviction about anything in particular and is instead trying to pull off stunts that seem to be impressing nobody. For example, his attempts to deny that their is an inflation problem but we might get one because Swan keeps talking about it has been greeted with the stunned disbelief that it deserves. It looks like it is going to be a long time before the Liberals regain any sense of coherence and in the meantime Rudd will be so far down the path of reform, with the electorate enjoying the benefits of better schools, hospitals, infrastructure, governance generally, that they will most likely want to see Rudd finish the job. The Liberals will be left languishing, eating dust., for a decade or more.

Well said to David M, Possum! The conservatives have emerged as wet lettuce, immature, sulking fops with a prime example as its leader. At do or die time they drag out an ageing James Dean look-alike while they decide whether to regroup, re-build or retire. They do this every time the toss doesn’t go their way and the electorate is sick of petulance and lame-duck responses. Facts of life: Kev and his Sallies band are the breath of fresh air we all needed and there is no right-to-rule. In a balanced political system parties come and go from office. The inherent problem with the Liberals is they want all or nothing and that’s why in the now world of essential compromise, they’ve become irrelevant. In more ways then one, they need to find the middle ground.

I don’t see how one can predict a Government will be in for fifteen years. All it takes is one good opposition leader. Just look at Rudd, a year before the election, when the Bomber was still leading, people were speculating how many more elections the Coalition will win before the ALP talent vacuum was filled. And look at federal politics now.

more pap from Tony. assuming Rudd retains his popularity, Tony thinks the ‘union network’ would risk it all and ‘have him done over’. he’s ‘almost certain’ of it! what’s your historical precedence of Labor Prime Minister’s being ‘done over’ by union straw men? absolutely none of course. but pray tell who it will be that replaces Rudd.

That ‘s funny David (retiree Hobsons Bay City Council?). A volcano in Chaiten Chile explodes into life after 2 millenia. A tsunami kills or devastates up to a million Burmese. Rudd the guy with the valve is a legendary over worker. The meeja are showing real signs of bucking monolithic ALPdom with John Lyons manhandled, raids on newsrooms in WA, Heather Ewart of 7.30 etc at abc even getting ANNOYED, with other half Barry Cassidy noting abc cameras blocked from an ABC studio for god sake. 12-13 years you reckon, eh? I reckon that’s as certain as my fear of 1-2 metre sea rise in 12-13 years. Or more. In which case Rudd will be welcome to it. Main opposition? Green Party.

I’m a rusted on ALP supporter so hopefully my comments will be received in this light. The Comitatus analysis is a disaster for Australia. Any democracy can only thrive on a healthy combat of ideas and with oppposition parties being a credible alternative option to whoever is power at the time. An ineffective and marginalised oposition is a recipe for the Government of the day to be captured by the rent seekers and lobbyists rather than driven by the interests of electors. Ultimately we may as well live in pseudo-democratic states like Japan or USA.

A few predictions. I think this Labor government will be one of the longest in the nation’s history. Fifteen years, possibly more if the Liberals cannot lift themselves off the mat. Rudd will be PM for 12-13 years. Of course I recognise that Gillard would like to be PM one day and would ideally not like to wait that long but I do not think we are going to see destabilising tension a la Keating or Costello. For one thing she seems to intensely enjoy the work that she is doing now and the task of reforming education is at very heart of the government’s agenda. There is a huge opportunity for her to make her mark in a big way which is likely to satisfy her for a long time to come. She has genuine power and authority in a way Costello never did. What do other readers think? What are your predictions?

Best news for Jenny because there have not been any particularly good news from Chairman Rudd & co. Let’s see - what has Kevin done apart from some token symbolism that fizzles faster than last wekend’s sports results. Oh, he’s theatening to make life more financially challenging with a tough budget despite the squeeze on families becoming noticably tighter since he was elected. No wonder Jenny & her ilk have to seek good news from the Liberals.

Kevin Rudd is almost certainly not going to be leading Labor in 6 years time for a 3rd election attempt. The union network wil have him done over by then. Perhaps he’ll develop a depression like Geoff Gallop or simply skip off to pursue other interests. Whatever the excuse, he’ll be shown the exit door. And it won’t be Julia that replaces him.

Howard killed the Liberals(conservatives) and good riddances! If only for good. Stop trying to give this honour to Brendon, he’s just not capable. Face it, Howard’s the man(no offence intended), credit where it’s due. Accept it and move on. Also alarming, Johny getting his back slapped by the fearful neocons of his ilk, here and overseas. They still don’t understand do they,’LONG LIVE THE PRETENCE”. Howard, once finally exposed to the true “she’ll be right, oops, hang on there mate” Aussies of this great country, now has the conservatives out of office in every Government in Australia, rightly so, except for the Brisbane City Council, and does it count? Not. This must truely rate as a record in failed leadership! Sadly, it took nearly 12 aweful years of Johny’s lies, opportunistic missuse of a few fustrated fundamentalists (neanderthals) and retro ignorance to unravel, which exposed this fraud to all, except of cause, to the evolutionary loyalist throwbacks that defy all known logic.

I honestly don’t think that Nelson is the problem for the Coalition. With such stigma from the Howard years, the first opposition leader was always going to be a goner. Nelson may have even laid the foundation in dragging the Libs back towards the centre (compared to Howard), but it will take some time before that reaps any dividend. Costello knew this.
