It would be far more humane to centrally employ, on a permanent basis, a pool of relief teachers. They could share resources, 'belong' to one location, avoid having the demoralising experience of fronting up to Centrelink in school holidays and feel a whole lot better about themselves. They could apply for mortgages and have some financial security in their lives. They could develop professionally by developing reources and attending the training that permanent teachers are entitled to. School students would have better learning experiences if taught by people whose backs aren't up against the wall. They would not take part in bullying a relief teacher so often.

We used to have competitions to see who'd be the first to make the substitute teacher cry.

So many memories.

Oh, how true this is, particularly your observations about permanent staff. I loved relief teaching, but only after the kids realised that, substitute though I was, I still dished out detentions. And I never cried.

All that abuse from the kids added to the contempt of those lucky enough to have a permanent position makes the lot of a supply casual a particularly unhappy one. A bucket load of crap from students and one's so-called peers for, at best, two thirds of a permanent teacher's salary! And without supply casuals, the system would collapse.
