As far as the selection process goes, I agree there were some glaring gaps in the final line-up. That said, this event was actually more demographically diverse than most of the 'just conferences' I go to - including ones organised by fiercely independent lefties. There were flaws in the process design, first indicated in Kevin Rudd's summary of the aims in the SMH: "To unleash the national imagination from beyond the ranks of politics and the public service", and "To help fashion a national consensus around a common vision for the nation, with common goals to aim for within that vision." These are two very important, but fundamentally different and possibly mutually incompatible aims. Consensus-building is not conducive to creativity or vice versa. With so little time, it was hard for any idea that wasn't already easily understood and supported to make it to the 'top 3'. But the scribes assured us that everything else would be recorded, so you might want to check the final report.

It's still just a conference Miriam, and the fact you split off from building community media scrutiny at New Matilda to policy construction suggests you are happy to be inside the Rudd tent. Your choice but note that the blanket brand coverage was happening while you guys were in the gilded cage. And it was pretty flaky too. All that rah rah, careful choreography and lack of transparency on selection process. The biggest issue of all - climate change has been a failure by all accounts. How sad is that. I looked to me like Rudd lacks conviction even while Howard had strong wrong ones. The two major parties don't have very much of what the Greens have - soul and ideals. As the world moves to hoplessly unsustainability. Both majors are flopping around business as usual. Talent like you, Verity Firth here in NSW, are fed into the maw but the big Machine is just getting slower and dumber if you ask me and the 20C political economy doesn't fit, if it ever did.

The runaway winner here in red and blue was ' Whatever it Takes '

Second place in the pale blue colours, was ' Daylight '. Regrettably, ' Procedural Integrity ' was hobbled at the starting barrier. TAB final dividends were as announced prior to the race but a stewards enquiry is unlikely..
