I agree preventative health is crucial to our long term well being and also think it cannot start early enough. It may interest you to look into the issue of pre-conception health as many children are conceived by parents who unknowingly are carrying high levels of toxic heavy metals in their systems. This has been linked with poor health in children both physical and mental. Some government funding for research and action in this area could yield enormous benefits for the whole community as most of us live in a heavy metal laden environment.

Rosemary, keep pushing that issue about "the interaction of health with climate change"! Why do we have to watch people starve because staple crops like rice and corn are being used for bio-fuels? Surely a case can be made for the regulated channelling of sugar cane into ethanol production and price controls for food crops? Wartime rationing of sweets and sugar resulted in unlooked for improvements in health for whole populations. Surely climate change will soon be so critical as to make a war footing on these matters generally acceptable. It is also increasing accepted that vegetarians and others who eschew dairy products and meat for health reasons are supporting the environment. Your repuation would make you a powerful advocate for breast feeding here and in the developing world not just for the health of babies but also for global limits on the dairy industry.
