re:The problem to come with climate change. All the nonsense being talked by the Federal Government about its efforts to keep down petrol prices.I imagine that the vast majority of Australians are familiar with, and concerned about climate change, and are prepared to do their bit to help mitigate it's effects.
However at this point we are still running a carbon based economy and the motor car is an integral part of our society. Those who are less well off are being expected by some to pay a proportional higher price than the more affluent.
We readily accept that the richer members of society pay more income tax than the poorer. In this age of computers there appears to me to be no reason why poorer citizens should not pay a different excise than the richer.
As I pointed out elsewhere if Woolworhts can issue swipe cards to discount fuel by four cents at their service stations it should be possible for the federal government to do likewise. with a swipe card with photo ID and the rego

Steve Martin - Farmer is not writing about science fact or even ethics. He's writing abou the politics. But keep in mind RF's generational guilt and denial then you can get a grasp on his wisdom, such as it is. The Survey is Sept 07 before both the Academy Award and Nobel Prize for Gore et al. It is also before the lastest UN IPCC iteration which itself is sadly tragically lowest bearable common denominator without sending the world's best scientists out the next top floor window in utter dispair, govt granted project work or no. Lastly it's at the end of 7 years of the most expensive, evil, cynical dishonest suppression of climate science agenda of a US Big Oil President this world is ever likely to have the misfortune to experience, and a fatal one it may just be, ask any actuary worth half their salt on an exponential rate of ocean level sea rise starting off a humble .05 mm per year. Looks small. Looks irrelevant. Just like an avalanche starts slow. God help us.
