Mitchell may be spot on with his analysis of the Unions position but he passes over the rather important fact that the Labour Prime Minister has indicated he's playing on Morris Iemma's team. I would have thought that would count for something when we get to the business end of the proceedings.
There is a compelling economic argument for privatisation. Ask John Brumby and Anna Bligh. That the Unions can maintain this government monopoly with all its attendant ' featherbedding' simply vindicates what John Howard warned last election.
The Union boys are back in town! Lock up your businesses!

Actually there is no decent economic case for the sale as per Betty Con Walker ex Treasury official, and spouse Bob Walker Prof of Accounting at Sydney University, as published more recently in the SMH. Also those other states privatisations were so long ago as to be pre dangerous climate change which policy issues actually elected Rudd. Rudd addressed this with China Inc with a very unconvincing carbon capture sequestration experiment while overseas just this last week, and Norway's Peteroleum Safety Authority 07-08 report has seriously challenged the safety issues in the so called clean coal approach. Meanwhile in the US W Bush regime have dumped similar $1B future gen project as too much, too hard, too delayed to help. In conclusion we will need every public policy instrument in the tool kit INCLUDING OWNERSHIP to really address reform of the carbon economy. That's the hard truth Treasurer Costanomics can't and won't face up to.
