Really the best way to avoid byelections from sore losers such as Costello, Downer etc is to legislate that in the event of a memeber not serving a full term (unless due to death), the candidate running second at the election takes over the seat.

Don’t overlook the fact that there are significant tax advantages in waiting until July of each year to retire. The point is not to boost income in the current tax year, but leave it until the following year to minimise tax.

Leave the opposition alone - they don’t matter. As for individual members, their electorates will sort them out. Politicians, like most people, think of themselves first.

Can Nelson get rid of them? They are elected MPs and, as backbenchers, there is not any post he can sack them from.
