The assertion that taxpayers will baulk at funding election campaigns is an urban myth. If anything, the public is fed up with developers and corporates regularly filling the pockets of greedy politicians in the name of political expediency.

why is "third-party advertising, the bane of American political life"? could you please explain this more...

as far I can see it enforces reporting/disclosure, since it's obvious who ran the ads. so where's the problem?

thanks Dave, i wasn't implying there wasn't a problem in the US. just not sure what the line referred to. Oz may go that way but I think we respond to 3rd party ads based on the funder's obvious identity (ACTU), not their obscurity. it's a smaller stage.

Rudd obviously wouldn't be too distressed at cutting funding given the spending power of the Union movement, this would need to be held in check as part of the Labor spend - it is essentially a shareholder in the ALP. In terms of public funding, how?

Nick, 3rd party ads in the US were recently mentioned by Guy Rundle. It's NOT obvious who's paid because groups are mysteriously set up to buy ads. Rundle's joke example was "paid for by Americans For Stuff". Funny because it's true.

also, re. public-funded election campaigns...for whom? every single party/person that wants to run? the Urban Taskforce submission recommends allocating funding based on electoral performance...which would seem to always favour the previous government..

sorry, meant the current government at a given election...who would still have the extra advantage of running publicly funded information campaigns in support of their existing policies...
