If we have passed the “safe” level for CO2 just reducing future emissions is not enough – we need to capture excess CO2 and reduce current levels. While technology can reduce future emissions only BIOLOGY can capture and reduce current excess CO2.

Professor Garnaut as the chairman of Lihir Gold is responsible for the deforestation catastrophe on Lihir. Now to offer the barren landscape as a carbon sink is hideous in the extreme, its perverse. Arrrrgh

The main problem with Garnaut’s comments (http://www.blognow.com.au/mrpickwick/83318/Marathon_Woman.html) is the idea that we shouldn’t aim for 90% without other countries. Why not Ross? Why ever not?

the PNG angle is way off base. their abatement opportunities are theirs, not ours. they are like any other asset, like copper for eg. we have no right to exploitation & they have no cause to burden share. this is bougainville redux.

The suggestion rather is to buy the carbon credits from PNG and Indonesia i.e. by buying the preservation of their forest (?) to offset our own failures, not least Gunns planned pulp mill in Tas, but also Vic/NSW ALP woodchippers in the south east corner.

Prof. Garnaut is the chair of Lihir Gold, a mining company that dumps 89 million tonnes per year of toxic cyanide into the ocean off PNG, destroying precious coral reef. Why was an economist & not an environmental scientist or a group selected to report?

yes Tom, but we buy on the cheap. PNG could just as easily sell the credits into a global scheme at fair value. do the math mate. its wrong.

So the Australian Government pay for planting trees on private companies deforested lease hold in PNG & We the taxpayer pay for the ecological remedy & the companies that caused the deforestation don’t, Garnaut is a genius and gets away with killing Lihir
