I worked for Immigration in Ron Brown’s time and helped implement a screen-based computer system for making decisions on visa eligibility. I agree with Marie that a systematic approach has to be better than relying on Ministerial discretion.

Better to have clear criteria for immigration eligibility, and a decision process which is appellable. Such a long time since Minister Gerry Hand sacked Dept.Sec Ron Brown for trying to introduce this system - after all it works for income security .
