The point of digital broadcasting (or one of them) is to remove the scarcity of channels. Therefore, the AFL can charge what the market will bear (not very much) in non-AFL areas, and the stations can transmit it on an alternative digital channel

They tried a (subscription only) AFL channel on Foxtel a couple of years ago and it failed miserably. Reason - all people want to watch is the actual game (24 hrs from 168/ week for 26 weeks); all the filler programs get the sad sacks and nobody else.

I am reliably informed that the AFL’s efforts in Western Sydney, particularly in the last 5 years, are REALLY ready to pay-off. The NRL is heading for a hiding in its heartland. Rugby union is not a contender out West…hail the West Sydney Blacks!!!!
