My guess re SDT its the 5th estate. Rupert got Penberthy in because blogs were girding for a gang bash of the rag and everyone in it, not least high volume Get Up. I myself have been culture jamming Blair and lining up fatty Piers. Even mossies hurt.

An important factor here might be mX, the free Murdoch trash tabloid. For a lot of rednecks and apolitical kiddies who might otherwise have brought the Tele, mX would be about as much print as they could stand. So the Tele is the big loser.

The newspaper subscription is one of the first things to go if things get tight. Inflation and pokies may be taking their toll. And pokies players, unlike horse gamblers, do not need the paper. I would expect other papers to follow.

I dunno... you only have to read the comments to some Tele stories online to see the redneck element is alive and well.
