It would be certainly good to see some of the Howard appointees go but the government has a huge problem in the APS. There are thousands of people close to retirement - the last of the baby boomers - and if they start to go as well we are in dire strait

Who the hell cares about "Canberra". Its Australia that matters and if there is some good experience in servants of the previous government why waist them so that pinko journalists similar to your story author, Alex Mitchell, are employed.

Give me a break!. Rudd won because he assured voters there would not be any substantial changes, so effectively had Howard set the agenda, especially on matters economic . Rudd has just got to keep his cowboy union mates and Julia Gillard on leash.

This is exactly like Tony Blair in 1997. All Labour voters were happily anticipating the axe falling on the last government's most hated right-wing advisers, but nothing happened. It gradually became clear Tony liked them. Nothing had changed at all.

Bruce, FYI, Canberra is where the people work who run the Australian Public Service. The problem is that their experience may not be "good" -- that's the point. BTW, the word you were looking for is spelt "waste".

It sounds as though Mitchell has friends eager to move up, especially in his reference to Bill Farmer, a career diplomat himself.

Perhaps the Government is waiting for these people to show their true colours. Some of them will revert to type, others won't. Rudd says his is an evidence-based government; he's waiting for the evidence. Some will be looking for new jobs just in case.
