One would like to believe that seen in context, Keelty’s views are not as reprehensible as they seem, that he is not suggesting that his blunders not be open to public scrutiny. Alas too hard a task. Time Keelty was show the door. Game over!

Mr. Keelty is out of his depth. Where would Dr. Haneef be today without the courage of his lawyers and the help of the media? Keelty should have resigned at the time Kevin Andrews was booted out.

Greg Barnes asks two rhetorical questions;
‘Is Australia’s most senior law enforcement officer suggesting that the AFP should not be scrutinised by journalists like Hedley Thomas, who won a Walkley for exposing the folly of the Haneef case?
Does he really think that in a democracy it’s ok for law enforcement agencies to expect the media to accept the veracity of every action taken by them?’
It is important for the smooth functioning of our democratic institutions that they be taken seriously, as it seems that Commissioner Keelty takes them seriously, but answers “Yes” to both. This is very worrying.

The bloke should either resign or be fired. He is incompetent as well as being unable to understand that a democracy demands public scrutiny of all government actions, both current and previous.

Why blame Mick Keelty. All he did was Howard’s bidding which was his job is. He now does Rudd’s bidding so what’s changed. Everyone fell over Mick when he coordinated the Bali investigation but how soon we all forget. Haneef is but one individual who may have been dealt with harshly because the information about pointed in that direction at that time. Maybe Haneef did’nt play ball with the AFP and had he have been a little more forthcoming this may have not reached the heights it did. Maybe Keelty was under pressure from Howard’s Hollowmen to come up with another terrorist trophy prior to the last election. Howard did like to instill fear into the hearts of Australians prior to election. Who do you trust I ask?

If he could put a case together, with good / accurate evidence, it wouldn’t matter what the media says. I think his comments highlight exactly why we need the media to be on their tails. It begs a question about all the other AFP cases.

Greg Barns is right on the money in his comments on Keelty and the AFP. Keelty would have us believe that any AFP activities in relation to terrorism are warranted, above board and not subject to any politcal influence….please! Thank god for the media!

Lets not forget that he is responsible for the arrest of the Bali 9 when charged with the welfare of one of them.Most of them will be shot.
