The super-confident Mungo is ignorant of some key facts: the NT cops aren’t as supportive of permits as he claims. Quite a number of communities have kept journos out for self-serving reasons, including adversity to the shame associated with sex crimes.

The fact that Aboriginal land is private property does not mean it is essential to have permits. Whitefellas own property, and none that I know require visitors to get a written permit in advance. Pedophiles and dealers already live in the communities.

Mr Husband in what you call “whitefellas australia” there are places such as religious communities where you must get permission in advance to go. also, if you just turned up unannounced on many farms you would be asked to leave forcibly.

The bleeding, effing obvious! Thank you Mungo for saying it. Permits reflect Aboriginal cultural values - Aboriginal people - paper or not - would never barge into foreign country without permission. Perhaps we should get rid of passports too?
