Sixty years ago, this bloke would have worked with the tobacco companies. Oh dear, how far we have come and how little we have learnt. As my long departed father would say: "You can't put a wise head on young shoulders". And asbestos was OK then too!

This assessment gets my endorsement, but I'd love to know more about our regulatory system.

Any chance of a follow-up article going into the details and spelling out the strengths and weaknesses?

Alas this issue attracts much heat and little light.

Just on Newton's ideas about gravity - there was an obscure scientist called Albert something who had something to say about them in the early 20th century, but it probably wasn't important.

Ben Gilna says foods have been carefully examined. Many dispute this because independent scientists can't get access to GM seeds for proper testing. And we can't choose to avoid GM canola because our food authority does not require it to be labelled.

Disappointed - not one mention of super weeds i.e. supercharged crop species. As Steve Biddulph wrote in Fairfax press recently - 'it's the ecology stupid'. GMO version of cane toad, fox, rabbit, camel, water buffalo???!!!.

It appears clear from the experience in many countries where GM has been given the green light - the choice people have vanishes soon after GM pollen spreads. Non-GM farmers have no way of stopping the spread of GM pollens. Where's the choice Mr Gilna?

I don't like the idea of Monsanto et al having exclusive IP rights to seeds that farmers rely on for their livelihood and the nation may rely on for its food supply. Not to mention the trojan horse effect of GM canola. Health is not the only issue with GM

Most studies suggesting health effects refute yr claim "genetically engineering a food is like adding or removing an ingredient." My understanding: engineering a trait(like pesticide)can affect the whole DNA & create novel proteins never before consumed.
