Perhaps Costello underestimated the political motivation of the Reserve Bank's upper echelon. There is nothing that a rate rise now would not achieve in a month;s time except to create political porblems for Howard. Are oil or v egie or housing prices going to fall now?

A political problem for Howard. Boo bloody Hoo.
Tony, we will have to live with the Howard/Costello legacy for a few years to come even after they are turfed out, so you can still have that to hold on to mate.

What's last election have to do with Reserve Bank's decisions today? Aren't you backing me as you agree rate rise won't do much about inflation pressure? Plasma TVs have fallen in price thus pulling inflation down. Wealth envy over cashed up bogans?

No Tony, they won't, but perhaps people will think twice before borrowing to buy a plasma. I wouldn't accuse Stevens of having anything other than a long memory - following the Libs' 2004 ad campaign falsely attributing misinformation as sourced from RBA.

Reserve lifts rates, day later oil price rises towards $100/brl, petrol price will follow & inflation stats will rise again next month. Nothing achieved by this month's rate rise other than providing political ammunition.
